Rippling
Paystubs
In this ongoing series, we design and create a slew of charming stylized looping animations for Rippling, a company that lets you easily manage your employees’ payroll, benefits, expenses, & more, in one place.
Making Paystubs Fun
When an employee gets paid through Rippling, they receive a paystub via email to let them know. In that notification and in the paystub itself you will find one of these little weirdos paired with some fun cheeky copy. Our job is to bring some fun and humor to something that would otherwise be boring.
Final Result
These are a few examples of how these assets are leveraged across multiple channels As you can see the copywriters at Rippling get to have a lot of fun with this too!
Our Recipe
As we have come to make over 50+ stubs, we have been able to tune our workflow to be fast and predictable …which can be difficult when each stub can literally be anything! These are the 4 main phases each stub goes through.
First we collectively brainstorm and riff on ideas that would be fun to look at and that can seamlessly loop in a short but interesting way. Once we have our idea, the step step is to sketch out initial designs. This is where we explore design, composition and the general readability of an idea. These have to feel positive and celebratory while also hopefully being a little witty and clever.
After a couple round of sketches we move into the next phase, which is recreating the idea in 3D. For this we use Cinema 4D as our main software package. All of our stubs have an isometric(ish) view and a very clean look but also one that can be tactile and handmade feeling.
Here are a few examples of how we iterate through color and style options to hone in on our final look and to offer our clients options.

Most stubs have some sort of an isometric feel, so we always will create our assets with the camera in mind and not waste time on details that no one will ever see.
